Graduate students must have access to information through as many means as possible. Dean James C. Wimbush tasked the Trauma Resource Committee (IUB and IUPUI) to gather resources that could help graduate students recognize and define trauma in their lives and get the help they need to recover and heal. Please note, these resources are not exhaustive. Although The University Graduate School provides this information, other units/departments (e.g., CAPS, GPSG) continue to make available relevant and valuable resources.
Although this information focuses primarily on trauma, we also want to call your attention to another term you might be familiar with: resilience. "Resilience means being able to adapt to life's misfortunes and setbacks (Mayo Clinic)." Part of adapting means recognizing what is interrupting and disrupting our harmony or balance, which helps us recover from the disruption, deciding while we do so what we can keep or not keep. It also recognizes we do not have to experience trauma to be resilient. Having a slow recovery from a traumatic event does not mean something is wrong with you, and being okay takes time, community, and sometimes professional assistance. For more information about resilience.
Included Resources
The committee selected these resources from hundreds of possibilities with attention given to COVID-19, racial violence, intimate partner violence, depression, and anxiety. Resources include articles, books, info-grams, a screening tool, videos, and webinars from CAPS. Also included is information on what to do and where to seek help when/if needed. Part of getting through this is knowing that you are part of more than one community that can support you and that resources are available when needed. Finally, we have included information on organizations that offer training and/or certification in trauma-informed practices.
Recognizing as we move out of isolation, receive vaccines, and come to a fuller acknowledgment of the grief and mourning that is happening, additional resources are needed. In the future, we may offer live webinars or workshops to address specific concerns.
For now, the resources respond to the following questions:
- What are change and the paradox of change?
- What is trauma?
- How do I recognize trauma in myself and others?
- What can I do to address my trauma or to get help?
- How can I cope with grief during or after trauma?
- How can I learn more or participate in trauma-informed practices?
